The History of St. Luke’s

An illustrated talk to celebrate 150 years since the opening of St Luke’s church looking at how it came into being and some of the challenges of its early years.

Part one will look at life in Ramsgate in the 1870s  complete with photos, adverts, stats and highlight the gap between rich and poor which was one of the key reasons to build St Luke’s. I then tell the story of how the project began, provide a bit on the Whitings and talk about the school. 

Part two will look at the church building process from architect to raw materials, the link to St Lawrence college and the early ministry of the church with particular attention to its feeding of the poor and outreach overseas. It ends with some quotations from the Archbishop’s address with a view to everyone leaving suitably inspired for the next 150 years!
