Setting hearts and minds on God’s word

to grow in godly character

One of the key ways in which as a church we grow in Christ is through the preaching and teaching of the word of God - the Bible. The Bible says: “It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fulness of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:11-13, NIV).

The Bible is the inspired word of God. It is God speaking to us. Through its words we come to learn the good news of how Jesus has saved us and it’s through its teaching that we are trained in righteousness. As it also says in the Bible: “…the holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God can be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16, NIV)

For all these reasons we take the Bible very seriously at St. Luke’s encouraging one another to submit to its teaching. Indeed, Bible study is at the centre of many of our activities.

Central to our meeting together on Sundays is preaching and teaching from the Bible. If you want to hear some examples of some sermons, then why not click here to listen online: Sermon Downloads. Or better still why not join us on a Sunday morning and/or evening!

Also we have many smaller groups that meet together to study the Bible. Our Growth Teams have Bible study as a central component to most of their fortnightly meetings. Further our desire is that our children and young people also grow to maturity through being taught the Bible effectively. So again this is a major part of what our Sunday Club and Pathfinder groups do on a Sunday morning.

In 2006 we are particularly encouraging people to try reading the whole Bible through in a year. We will be publishing a Bible Reading program a week at a time in the weekly news sheet given out in church, but if you want to see the full program then please click on this link:
